Brno, Oct 6 (BD) – Local women’s basketball teams look to stay undefeated early in season; FC Zbrojovka extends lead atop standings, Líšeň maintains second place; VK Šelmy Brno host VK Královo Pole in women’s volleyball derby on Thursday; HC Kometa in 10th place; and Lokomotiva tie Liberec prior to hosting Sparta Saturday.
Brno Hosts Prague on National TV Tonight
Basket Brno has built a 3-1 record with solid all-around basketball that will be showcased against USK Praha on live television this afternoon in Hala Vodova.
The CT Sport telecast starts at 6:20 p.m.
Basket Brno opened the season with victories against GBA Fio banka J. Hradec and GEOSAN Kolín. They lost at home to last season’s runner-up BK Opava. And, most recently on Saturday, beat host BK ARMEX Děčín, 63-79.
One of Brno’s strengths is their back court. Veteran Roman Marko is in his first season with the team and the poster boy for today’s game against Prague. Viktor Půlpán led the team on Saturday with 23 points.
“We are both ‘quarterbacks’, but each different,” Půlpán said. “In the previous match, it seemed more to him, today to me.”
Marko had 10 assists on Saturday.
“Both point guards were a key factor,” said head coach Lubomír Růžička after the Děčín game. “Roman Marko commands more. Viktor Půlpán plays more from the wing and today he hit from a distance, which was a limit for him in the past. But this is the main ingredient compared to last year: today it is a basketball game for guards.”
Unfortunately, Brno is banged up in advance for tonight’s game. Pivot Šimon Puršl and wing Rashad Madden will both be on the bench.
“We definitely have to be consistent in defense and with rebounding and get into a higher rhythm on the attack,” said Luboš Bartoň, the assistant coach of Basket Brno. “We will rely on the axis of experienced players Marko – Půlpán – (Hunter) Mickelson – (Richard) Korner, and I hope that our young players will continue to take advantage of their opportunities.”
The Kooperativa NBL has 12 teams. The first phase of the season has each play each other, home and away; the final 22nd round is in mid-January. The top teams move on to the second phase in order to determine postseason seeding. The weakest teams face relegation. Last year, Basket Brno reached Group A1 for the first time when it finished fourth in the first phase of the season with a 13-9 record.

Brno Teams Look to Stay Unbeaten for Another Week
Žabiny Brno (3-0) go to BK Strakonice today and then SBŠ Ostrava on Saturday. The team announced this week that they signed Monika Grigalauskyté, a 29-year-old Lithuanian national-team player, to fill the space under the basket with her 191-cm frame.
KP Brno (2-0) goes to BK Strakonice on Friday.
The first match-up between the two Brno powerhouse teams is set for Nov. 20 in Zabovresky.
Zbrojovka Takes Seven-point Lead
FC Zbrojovka Brno has opened up a lead of more than two wins through a third of the Fortuna:Národní Liga season.
Last Friday, Zbrojovka beat second-place AC Sparta Praha B, 2-1. Brno (8-1-1, 25 points) is seven points ahead. AC Sparta Praha B (6-0-4), who lost 2-1 in Brno on Friday, FK Varnsdorf (5-3-2) and SK Líšeň 2019 (5-3-2) are in a tie for second place with 18 points.
Today, Zbrojovka will travel to Varnsdorf for a MOL Cup game. Varnsdorf is one of the blemishes on Zbrojovka’s domestic-league record because of a tie in August.
The domestic league continues on Friday, Oct. 15 when Vyškov (4-1-5, 13 points) visits Brno. The game starts at 5 p.m.
Líšeň Maintains Second place
What comes around, goes around. SK Líšeň 2019, which beat FC Vysočina Jihlava when it converted an added-time penalty kick on Sept. 25, was forced to settle for a 1-1 tie on Saturday when Slezsky FC Opava converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute.
Líšeň (5-2-2, 17) had a four game winning streak. Now they have a five game unbeaten streak.
